You can get fat from proteins myth

Muscles and fats are made up of very different types of cells that have completely different functions.  Skeletal muscles get larger when a person exercises primarily from hypertrophy; in other words, the person isn’t gaining more muscle cells (which would be hyperplasia), rather, the ones they have are just getting bigger, with more filaments and the like being developed within the cells to accommodate the more challenging demand on them.

After a person quits exercising, the muscle cells aren’t going away and somehow managing to morph into fat cells; rather, they are simply shrinking.  This allows the body to conserve energy when a person’s daily activities don’t require as much muscle mass; muscle cells take quite a bit of energy to maintain (resting caloric usage of 13 Calories per kilogram per day).

The myth that muscles turn to fat when a person stops exercising probably stems from the fact that people who body build or otherwise exercise quite a bit, who then stop exercising, tend to start looking a little squishy around the edges.  There are a few different things that contribute to this, but primarily, it all comes down to caloric intake.

Specifically, people who exercise regularly tend to accustom themselves to eating quite a bit more food than people who maintain a relatively healthy body weight without exercising.  Once they stop exercising though, they instantly lose the need for the calories used during their workouts, which is often quite significant.

It gets worse though.  Over time, as their body loses muscle mass, their body needs significantly fewer calories even when they aren’t working out.  As noted before, resting skeletal muscle cells burn approximately 13 Calories per kilogram per day or around 6 Calories per pounds per day.  So they’ll even see quite a difference there while they’re just sitting around doing nothing.

So bottom line, people who exercise regularly who suddenly stop, tend to gain fat quickly because they don’t adjust their food intake to compensate for their decreased caloric needs, not because muscle cells are somehow turning into fat cells.

Bonus Factoids:

  • There are three main types of muscle cells.  The first is smooth muscle, which lines the walls of certain blood vessels and the walls of the esophagus, uterus, stomach, urethra, bladder, and intestines, among other places; this type of muscle is considered involuntary.  The second type is cardiac muscle, which is also involuntary and is only found in the heart.  The third type is skeletal muscle, which closely resembles cardiac muscle cells and is what most people think of when they think of muscles.  Skeletal muscles are attached to ligaments which in turn are attached to bones.  Cardiac muscle cells tend to be connected in irregular angles, which are called intercalated discs.  Skeletal muscle cells, on the other hand, tend to be arranged in parallel bundles.
  • Within the types of muscle fibers that we can consciously control, there are slow twitch and fast twitch types.  Slow twitch muscle cells are much weaker than fast twitch muscle cells, but they are designed for endurance.  Fast twitch muscle cells are relatively strong compared to their slow twitch counterparts, but by virtue of their design, have very little staying power.
  • How muscle cells work is as follows: they contain microscopic filaments with even smaller fibers attached to these filaments.  When electricity is carried into the muscle from the outer membrane, the fibers from the filaments hook onto fibers from other filaments and push against each other, thus causing the contraction.
  • Muscle soreness after workouts, generally appearing the next day, is not caused by lactic acid, as was once thought.  Rather, it is caused by tiny tears in the muscle fibers themselves.
  • Muscles are approximately 18-26% efficient in terms of the total metabolic cost vs. the actual mechanical work done.
  • On average, 42% of an adult man’s body mass is made up of skeletal muscle.  For women, that number drops to 36% on average.
  • As noted, skeletal muscles consume about 13 Calories per kilogram per day.  So, if you weigh approximately 81 kg (180 pounds) and are a man, your skeletal muscles will burn around 442 Calories per day when you are just sit around all day [(81 kg*.42)*13 Calories/kg].  If you are an average female at that same mass, you’ll burn about 379 Calories from your at rest skeletal muscles per day.
  • Fat cells will burn around 4.5 Calories per kilogram or approximately 1/3 what skeletal muscle cells will burn.  How much of your body mass is made up of fat cells varies greatly from person to person, but you can use a body fat test to get that number and then easily figure out how many Calories your fat cells burn per day. ((BodyFatPercentage * weight in kg)*4.5 Calories/kg)
  • Bone cells burn about 2.3 Calories per kilogram.  If you are a man, on average about 15% of your body mass is made up of bone.  For women, that number is around 12%.

The Difference Between Western & Eastern Medicine.

Most cancer related diseases such as myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), which is a ‘pre-leukemia’ type disease, are the result of auto-immune problems. Sadly, in the case of cancer treatment, using chemotherapy and radiation cannot really cure the disease most of the time. It is like the case of “locking the barn door after the horse is gone”. In fact, this treatment’s main job is effectively destroy the erratic immune system which are killing the healthy cells, and after the chemo treatment, doctors hope that nature would take over to rejuvenate the body again, because our DNA has all the information or blueprint to heal itself. The problems is, most people do not know what cancer really is, what triggers it and how Western medicine treats it. My reasoning is this. Western medical philosophy or rather Western allopathy treatments targets the symptoms not the disease. This reasoning , according to Dr.Samuel Hahnemann, (a German physician who is known for creating an alternative form of medicine called homeopathy), is that once the symptomatic effects of the disease has been alleviated, the human body should be strong enough to heal itself; provided that the body has all the time to recuperate and has access to proper nutrition as well. So essentially, Western medicine targets the symptom not the disease, and the body would cure itself, provided that it has all the ‘resources’ to heal itself are available. So essentially doctors cannot really cure you but they only help facilitate the healing process. (Traditional Chinese Medicine) TCM and other alternative healing methods such as Ayurveda and Homeopathy targets the disease not the symptoms, that is the cause not the effect. TCM philosophy is based on Hot and Cold, so in a scientific sense ‘Hot’ refers to an overly acidic blood and ‘Cold’ refers to an alkaline or pH neutral blood. The real reason why diseases like cancer comes about is due to an overly acidic blood, which damages the immune system. Once the body’s ‘ecology’ becomes disrupted, which puts a lot of stress on the immune system, the system would go berserk and would go against the healthy cells as well. The immune system is programmed to only attack foreign bodies like viruses and bacteria but if it exists in a stressful environment, the immune system would not know friend from foe and would even attack the healthy cells as well. One way to remedy this is to neutralize the acidic toxins in the blood with alkaline derivatives which are organic in nature. Unfortunately, chemotherapy uses inorganic chemicals which are alkaline in nature but they do more harm than good, to achieve the same result. So most TCM and Ayurvedic treatments rely on alkaline based remedies. First and foremost they cleanse the system with herbs, and they strengthen the digestive system so that the food nutrients will be easily assimilated to heal and rejuvenate the cells quickly. They also recommend breathing exercises like Tai Chi or Yoga and a high alkaline diet, vegetarian mainly. The also recommend massages to expel the toxins in the fatty tissues. So basically it is not as invasive as Western medicine. In conclusion, proper diet, high alkaline, low carbohydrate and high protein diet is suitable for our generation. Getting away from highly polluted environment and exposure to chemicals is crucial. Learning to breath properly is also important, because CO2 build up also leads to blood acidity. Drinking lots of pure water also helps a lot. Most of all, living in a stress free environment helps. But I think the most important thing to do is to have a positive and optimistic frame of mind. Because if you are stressed, your breathing patten, digestive system or addiction to sugars and carbohydrates becomes worse, causing havoc to your body. I hope this helps. Cheers!

The Drug Industry

The Drug Industry

There seems to be an all out effort to make alternative healing much more difficult to obtain. The so-called health industry is nothing but a money making machine and so is the cancer ‘industry’. For example, people have been brainwashed into believing that cancer can only be cured through chemo-therapy do not have the statistics of the cure rate which is dismal! Thousands have been spent, live savings lost, families disunited, and the ‘cancer’ industry i.e. the pharma industries with the help of their cahoots in the FDA & the FTC are laughing all the way to the bank! Now it seems that a politician in California  is trying to pass a legislation to make it difficult or average Americans to use food supplements.

Check out this excerpt: (NaturalNews) Of all the sneaky tactics practiced in Washington D.C., this recent action by Congressman Henry Waxman (D-CA) is one of the most insidious: While no one was looking, he injected amendment language into the Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act of 2009 (H.R. 4173) that would expand the powers of the FTC (not the FDA, but the FTC) to terrorize nutritional supplement companies by greatly expanding the power of the FTC tomake its own laws that target dietary supplement companies.

This is a little-known secret about the FTC and the nutritional supplements business: The FTC routinely targets nutritional supplement companies that are merely telling the truth about their products. Some companies are threatened by merely linking to published scientific studies about their products.” –

It is a known fact that almost all diseases are caused by some form of immunological deficiency. The result of an overly acidic body caused by bad eating habits, excessive carbohydrates and proteins, environmental pollution, something called Electronic smog, and psychological/physiological stress. Now, for our immune system to function optimally, the physiological environment for the immune system must be conducive for its operation. Unfortunately blood acidity weakens the immune system. So, we need to start taking the proper supplement to boost the immune system, and have a more alkalinic diet to have optimal health. Probably I need to write a booklet to explain all of this!

The Cancer Industry

Do you really think that the current medical fraternity is interested in finding a cure for cancer? It’s just like the so called ‘War Against Terror’. It’s  a futile or a quixotic attempt to fight against something one is not totally aware of. On the same vein,we can also  ask ourselves whether we can really win the ‘Drug War’. If the drug enforcement authorities, like the DEA are really interested in the ridding the world of illegal drugs, their very success would mean  an end to their existence, which means the end of the DEA! A classic ‘Catch 22’ situation! Same thing applies here.Legalized drug pushers, aka the pharmaceutical companies, have a lot to lose if a cure for cancer was found. Funny thing is, there will be no cure for cancer if the current philosophy or belief system is pursued, period! The cancer industry is a huge money making franchise.

The adage, ‘know thy enemy’ is not fully realized in this context, simply because the medical experts are so focused on how to destroy cancer cells, that they are not taking into consideration the fact that they are also messing up the immune system. Ironically, it is a weak immune system that starts the onset of cancer. Current research is proving that a weak immune system, created by poor lifestyle choices, smoking, alcohol, pollution, ‘electronic smog’, diet, free-radicals and carcinogens causes cancer to develop. A weak immune system invites a whole barrage of viruses, retro-viruses and bacteria to attack the defenceless  human organism, so much so that a weak immune system which is totally stressed up in the ‘body’s ecology’,( that is the the environment which is necessary for a strong immune system to exist) makes the immune system to go amok and attack healthy cells. The body’s acidity level caused by the viral and bacterial invasion in the first place, makes the immune system weak. It’s as simple as that! So a simple commonsensical approach is to first neutralize the body’s acidity and second to ‘re-educate’ the immune system to identify and kill the invading foreign entities. Of course a healthy lifestyle, lot of fresh vegetables and fruits, alkaline water, exercise and a healthy dose of sunshine helps too! A product called ‘4Life -Transfer Factor’ seems to help as well, in reeducating the immune system.(The flyer for the product is attached above). Log on to:

http://www.4life.com/science/Default.aspx

Just last week I lost a friend named Joseph to this dreaded disease. I have also lost a few friends, a brother in law, 4 aunts and a few realtives, not to cancer but to chemotherapy! They have spent their life earnings, and even their families savings as well, just to die in the end, if they are not insured that is. Even if they had had got themselves medical insurance, it was not even enough to cover the cost for the chemotherapy or cancer treatment.

It is high time that we, the sane people of the  world, take control of our lives instead of handing it over to some medical zealots, people like the pharmaceutical industries, the medical establishments and even the FDA, who are hell bent in enriching themselves and their cohorts, at our expense!

The cartoon given below is worth a thousand words!

The Sick Industry

The Sick Industry

I have posted this comment of this health related site:http://www.thesickindustry.com/

(Click on this link to view the video)

-I have been commenting on this matter for years! Unfortunately, agencies like the FDA are agents of malicious intent working for the benefit of the drug manufacturers. In fact the directors and top brass of the FDA have some connection to the drug companies. This reeks of conflicts of interest of the highest order. The medical fraternity, knowingly or unwittingly have climbed into the band wagon, misinforming the public or maybe even have deliberately become specialists in disinformation, leading the public to their doom.
These government agencies are the very creators of the health epidemic worldwide. They have been created to address health issues not create and compound it. Anyway, the legalized ‘drug cartels’ are laughing all the way to the bank, all in the name of profit, and the public be damned! The public now has to bear the added medical costs, such as higher medical insurance rates, which is already straining the US economy. Agencies such as the FDA and all health related institutions; both government and private entities should be overhauled, forcing it to be more transparent, because absolute power corrupts absolutely! I hope leaders in the medical fraternity do  something about this over dependency on pharmaceutical drugs for the sake of our future generation!

Reducing High Uric Acid Levels

Celery and celery seeds are also known to reduce high levels of uric acids in the system. Being a natural diuretic, it helps the elimination of uric acid crystals from the system.(It also tends to reduce sodium levels for people with low BP making them a bit faint, so moderation is the key here, they need to replace the sodium loss by taking in some extra salt). Anyway, raw celery or celery juice it is much safer than any off the counter drugs.Celery is excellent for hypertension as well. You can also take grape seed oil which is somewhat like olive oil but  much more effective in strengthening the digestive system. ‘Transfer factors’, lactobacillus, yogurt  and enzyme extracts can also be of great help for your digestion.

Proper low carb and high alkaline diets may also help. Since poor amino acid/carbohydrate metabolism is the cause for the symptoms of gout, arthritis, rheumatism and to certain extent psoriasis, the proper combination of proteins, carbohydrates and alkalinic food such as vegetables and greens is essential, especially vegetables and fruits which have a lot of color, eat the rainbow so to speak.Try not to mix carbs with proteins as much as possible, simply because people with poor digestive systems cannot breakdown them properly for assimilation, which is sometimes referred to as mal-absorption. Carbs need an alkaline medium to break down and proteins need acids, basically when acids and alkalies mix they neutralize each other.

Try to have fruits at least 1/2 an hour before meals and less liquid intake during meals. Have a drink at least an hour later. Why less liquid intake during meals? Because liquids, like water, tends to dilute the strong hydrochloric acids in the stomach preventing proper digestion. This leads to the fermentation of the food in the stomach, which is bad new for your stomach. Try these simple methods. Anyway you have nothing to lose except some extra weight!

The Hidden Truth About High Carb Diets

The Hidden Truth About High Carb Diets

Have you ever wondered why some people, after going through one diet fad after another still don’t seem to lose any weight and are still obese, and even after joining gyms and tough regimens? Why are still in the ‘fat zone’?!  Well don’t wonder anymore.

The truth is, most of us have been misinformed, and maybe disinformed deliberately by certain people who have much to gain from this or who have vested interests, that is, those who call themselves dietitians (or dieticians)  as well as those in the medical community, including the ADA (American Diabetes Association). Or they have all been taken in by certain myths perpetuated by some people. Take for example the creator of the ‘Powerbar’, Brian Leigh Maxwell who was also a marathon runner. Maxwell never intended to become a marathon runner and lacked the speed necessary to be competitive at shorter distances. Despite being told as a teenager of his congenital heart condition, he persevered, and by 1977 he was ranked third among all marathoners in the world. Even though he was a model of fitness, at the age 51 he died of a heart attack!  This man who was a marathon runner, and who had a wife who was also a nutritionist, to top it all, suddenly died while he was in his 50’s. You can say his congenital heart condition may have killed him, but then again his dietary knowledge and habits may have been a contributing factor.

For over 40 years the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA), has been drumming into people’s minds that if one cuts down on salt, fats and sugars, one will have a healthy life. But after 40 years, more people in the US are more obese than ever before, which is more than 60% of the US population! This, to put it mildly, is creating havoc on the US health system, which also puts a strain on the economy and not to mention high medical insurance premiums. These people have been following the advice of the so called authorities in the FDA. They have taken less fat, salt and sugar but yet they are overweight. (FYI – You need fat to burn fat. That is a bio-chemical fact). Unfortunately, not one word has been uttered about the detriments of  high carbohydrate diets by the establishment. In India, for example, the cases of diabetes and hypertension are also common amongst vegetarians? Why you may ask? They are not true vegetarians or even vegans but for want of a better word, they are ‘carbotarians’! (I think I have just coined a new word!)

The Diet Pyramid espoused by the American medical fraternity fails on every count. Firstly, the so called pyramid was designed for people who were hard working individuals, who labor dawn to dusk, mainly farmers and the like during the early part of the 20th century. Before there were cars, planes, machines and such contraptions and devices of the mid 20th century, most of our forefathers would walk miles, ride a horse and do heavy farm work and the like. But now things are different, most of us work in air-conditioned offices; travel to and from work in air-conditioned vehicles; spend hours in front of the computer and TV. That is, basically a sedentary life-style. We do not need as much carbohydrates or calories as our forefathers did. It is interesting to note that one Dr. Weston Price, a dentist, observed that primitive tribes and cultures did not have any heart disease and diabetes or even dental problems, in the 1940’s. Probably a high carbohydrate diet may be necessary for people who do heavy labor daily, but the same amount will be too much for our present generation. (Granted, athletes and sports people do need a high-carb diet). A simple ‘input -output’ analysis can reveal a lot about our diet today. We are taking in much too much carbohydrates than the body requires. The global epidemic of diabetes, hypertension, cancer and obesity is proof of that. Obesity and diabetes are increasingly being linked to heart disease. The frightening scenario is that there would be an estimated 366 million diabetic cases by 2030!

An excessive carbohydrate diet poisons the system. First of, how does the body breakdown carbs? The carbs are broken down by an enzyme called amylase,  which is found in the saliva and in the pancreatic juices as well as by the insulin secreted by the pancreas which converts the carbs into glucose for easy absorption into the body. If the carbs are not properly broken down, the undigested carbs will become toxic to the system. It creates excessive acids to be formed in the stomach which is passed on to the blood. It is a known fact that our bloods pH should be neutral or a bit alkaline, but when the body become excessively acidic, alarm bells begins to ring in the form of symptoms related to diabetes and hypertension. A person with diabetes, and for that matter, cancer, has very acidic blood. Furthermore, an overly acidic blood can lead to a low immunity to disease or immunodeficiency disorders.

A bowl of rice a  place of pasta for instance, is equivalent to 10 tablespoons of sugar. Moreover, the ‘islets of Langerhans’ in our pancreas which are responsible for the production of insulin, are being over burdened with this glut of carbohydrates in the body. The job of insulin is to help the cells in our body to use the glucose, which is the body’s main fuel. The cells cannot work properly if there is too little insulin in the system, retarding their ability to use the glucose normally. This unused glucose accumulates in the body cells, blood and tissues and then it is carried out as urine. Sugar in the urine is the main indication of diabetes. Let’s not get too deep into the bio-chemical activity of the human body. The frightening thing is that, the mortality rate of for those with diabetes is 10% annually compared to 6% for non-diabetes sufferers.

Being a financial planner cum insurance consultant, I also deal with medical insurance. The medical claims from the company I represent reveals the fact that 40% of the patients with diabetes died from diabetes related causes versus about 26% who did not have diabetes. Additionally, mortality for diabetes patients was higher in each sub-group through age 85. But then again, has anyone really seen a very obese 80 year old man?!

There’s a story once told by the renowned motivation guru, Tony Robbins, in his book ‘Unlimited Power’. He was referring to a book by Alexander Schauss, ‘Diet, Crime and Delinquency’ in which a boy, a chronic juvenile delinquent, was discovered to be thoroughly addicted to sugar and carbohydrates (cakes, sweets, milkshakes, cokes, chocolates, doughnuts etc.), and he had to have his sugar fix every day! The amount of sugar he consumed was mind boggling. There is an obvious correlation between behavior and diet. An excessive carbohydrate and sugar diet can lead to aggressive and erratic behavior such as mood swings, uncontrolled anger and depression. And what do our modern doctors do? Prescribe more anti-depressant drugs such as Prozac! The major reason for his abnormal behavior is because of an imbalance in the bio-chemical activity in his body and all these problems can be rectified by a mere change in his diet. The majority of the poor and disenfranchised is the Black population in the US . They spend  most of their income on food, or buy food with food-stamps. Obviously they have a high-carbo diet, simply because they cannot afford meats and vegetables. Moreover, Blacks are genetically predisposed to the tropical climate, so once they are exposed to a colder clime, they put on weight. And because of their high-carbo diets, the poor have behavioral problems, who usually end up doing crime and ending up in jail. It is a fact that most jails in the US have a high proportion of Blacks, unfortunately. To avoid the detrimental effects of excessive carbohydrate diet, one just needs to follow the ‘30% rule.’ That is, reducing your carbohydrate-sugar intake by 30% and all will be well. As the old adage goes, ‘You are what you eat’!

For a better understanding of what really happens when the body is flooded with carbohydrates and sugars, it happens like this: When the pancreas has been conditioned to release insulin because of high sugar levels in the  body, the sudden rise and fall of insulin levels creates havoc in the system. One can go from hyperglycemic to hypoglycemic within a matter of minutes! Hypoglycemia is a condition of low blood sugars. Ironically, it is aggravated by consuming an excessive amount of refined carbohydrates and sugars. These substances cause the pancreas, the adrenal gland and the liver to lose their ability to handle the sugar properly. Other causes of low blood sugar are disturbed functioning of the liver, pituitary gland or adrenal glands. Stress intensifies this condition as it weakens the adrenal glands and starts a faulty pattern of glucose intolerance. Hypoglycemia or low blood sugar can make one tired, tense, irritable, moody and prone to anger. Until one gets a sugar fix. The brain too needs glucose to function well, when there is a drop in the glucose level in the brain, there would be behavioral changes. No wonder, parents nowadays with young children, are having a tough time keeping them under control. These kids are either having ADD, hyperactive, obese or delinquent. The number of obese children is on the rise in urban areas, but less so in rural areas, especially in developing countries. Go blame it on our fast food companies, the media/advertising deluge on young impressionable minds and the instant gratification mentality of the ‘baby boomer’ generation, their kids and now their grand-kids. In America, because of all the bad publicity against fast food, companies like McDonald’s are having low-carb menus now, forget the fact that a large Coke contains about 11 teaspoons of sugar and it does wonders for your teeth!

Going back in time, that is eons ago, Man was a hunter-gatherer. That is the man hunts and the woman gathers. His diet consists of animal meat, a variety of wild grains, legumes, tubers, vegetables and fruits. His diet was low in carbohydrates. At that time, Man is yet to cultivate the land and plant grains for food. The Inuit in Alaska and Siberia for example, have a very low carbohydrate but high protein diet, and there were no incidences of diabetes and the like, that was until the white man appeared and introduced bread and beer! There is also evidence that when the remains of an ancient hunter who was frozen in a glacier in Europe was discovered some time back, scientists found that most of his teeth was intact and his bones were much denser than the bones of the Egyptian mummies. The simple reason is because of a low-carb, high protein diet. It is a known fact that the Egyptians had a low protein, high-carb diet. In fact they were credited for the creation of beer, from their bountiful barley harvests from the Nile delta.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not advocating a high protein diet like the Atkins’ diet. Though the late Dr. Atkins’ diet had its merits, I would not recommend it to anyone, unless you have an active lifestyle. But if you seriously want to lose weight, it may work for you. Dr. Atkins, a cardiologist by training, had taken a lot of flak from the media, the medical establishment and ‘carbo-food’ manufacturers unfairly. His diet works because it fixes the bodies inability to metabolize carbohydrates properly. Unless you lead a very active lifestyle, like an athlete or a sportsman, or seriously want to be diabetes free, the diet may be helpful. But always remember to do the proper research and get a second opinion for the right people such as a doctor specialized in nutrition, endocrinology, obesity or diabetes.

One wonders why all this disinformation and misinformation has been going around for so long? This is because, of some people in the good old US of A, like people in the FDA, the politicians; the wheat, rice and sugar growers, will be losing a lot if the whole country if not the world cuts back on its carbohydrate intake. Wheat, rice, corn and sugar manufacturers have a lot  at stake and they are heavily subsidies by the US Govt. They are also very well organized and funded by strong politicking and lobbying. Imagine what would happen to the bread manufacturers, the cereal manufacturers, the pasta/spaghetti manufacturers, the sugar/chocolate/candy manufacturers, if they have a massive drop in sales. And they are all backed by strong unions. The FDA too has vested interests, because some of the directors were once CEOs of these very companies. Thankfully things are changing in the States, where there has been a noticeable drop in bread sales. Finally, some people have come to their senses
